Madurai Messenger

In September 2002, Projects Abroad, leading organizer of volunteer overseas work placement, joined forces with local journalists to establish the only regular publication to serve the town of Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu state. Every year, this unique publication has welcomed an increasing number of volunteer journalists. In 2009, the publication moved to Madurai and was then renamed “Madurai Messenger”. This is the first-ever English language magazine produced in the Madurai area. It is a monthly mtagazine covering many aspects of life in this town of almost 1 million people: society, industry, farming, public services, as well as environment, entertainment and information about all kinds of festivals and cultural events.

The magazine is currently published entirely in English. Its target readership is people involved in industry, education and public services.
The Madurai Messenger is written by overseas volunteer journalists from all over the world, supported by the editorial staff of the publication. It focuses on cross cultural journalism. The editor, Nandini Murali, sub-editor Ezhil Elango and Joel Powell act as placement supervisors for volunteers on the programme.

The magazine’s byline “Global Voices, Changing worlds” reflects a commitment to promoting inclusive journalism that is culturally sensitive, multicultural and pluralistic in its approach. Believing in journalism with a human touch, the range of articles are people centric.

As ambassadors of cross cultural journalism, the young writers recognize and honour the need for journalism that is inclusive regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, caste, religion, socio economic differences and sexual orientation.

New volunteers are always welcomed to join our professional staff. For more information: see the page “Become a Madurai Messenger journalist”

December 2011
issue

When Madurai Messenger (formerly Times of Madurai) decided to devote this issue to a theatre special (to commemorate World Theatre Day on March 27), we had an unexpected opportunity to watch the play Hind Swaraj (based on Mahatma Gandhi's book of the same name written in 1908) performed by Parnab Mukherjee and Cordis Paldano at the Madurai Messenger office.
